Russian players beat World team
The Russian veteran team scored the “Tennis legends” event 3-2.
Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Jim Courier opened the second day of the tournament. Yevgeny made a break and won the first set 6/4. He was substituted by Andrey Cherkasov, who scored the match 6/4, 6/3. Thus Russian team was ahead 2-1.
Safin and Cherkasov played Goran Ivanisevic and Sergi Bruguera in the doubles; it was the most exciting match of the tournament. It was a real tennis “burlesque”, never-ending tennis tricks, which were greatly welcomed by the audience. Eccentric Goran stood out from the other four players and he proved his reputation of the best showman in the tennis “circus”. Nobody seemed to be worried about the results of the match - neither the players, nor the audience. The Russian team won the doubles 6/4, 6/2 providing their upcoming victory of the whole match.
Marat Safin and Goran Ivanisevic played the final match quite seriously which consisted of only 1 set. The Croat clinched a nice victory at tie break.
“We reached the main goal we had set for us – hope that the audience liked the show, - said Yevgeny Kafelnikov at the final press-conference of the Russian team. – All the foreign participants are satisfied. We are very grateful to them for supporting our idea”.
“It was a great tournament which we enjoyed a lot. I will return to Moscow with great pleasure”, - said Jim Courier. The other members of the world team agreed with him. “I was happy to be back to Moscow, I like this city where I have so many friends”, - said Goran Ivanisevic.
